Ending weeks of relative calm in Kyiv, the sky was stuffed with smoke trails and blast clouds.
Panicked citizens, a few of whom had initially omitted the air raid sirens as they ate breakfast in cafes, rushed for protection.

There has been no comment from Kyiv, but on Monday, the top of the Ukrainian army intelligence, Basic Kyrylo Budanov, warned of a quick reaction to pre-daybreak assaults at the capital.
