A journalist who coated the murders of schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham twenty years ago remains to be haunted via the memory of killer Ian Huntley retaining a missing poster in his window.

It was a negative crime which horrified the nation and left an indelible mark on all the ones involved.

Debbie Davies, 62, was the deputy editor of the Ely Usual again in 2002 and remembers being out dispensing posters 4 days after the ladies vanished from a family barbecue in August FOUR.

They featured the photograph of the buddies wearing Manchester United shirts, taken at the day they disappeared, and text urging folks to touch Cambridgeshire Police in the event that they had any data.

Holly Wells (L) and her best friend, Jessica Chapman, pictured in their Manchester United shirts shortly before they disappeared. Holly and Jessica, both from Soham, Cambs, vanished on 4 August 2002. Their bodies were found near a track in Wangford, Suffolk, on 17 August 2002. Ian Huntley, the caretaker at their school, was found guilty of their murder.

Ms Davies says she was once ‘shocked’ Huntley never took the poster down.

‘each time he came out of the home then went again into the home the poster may have been looking at him,’ she said.

‘It’s not only it’s a poster – it’s that symbol of the girls in their T-shirts that he could have noticed that Sunday night time as they walked along the road, they came against him… We suppose he was outside the house or he got here outdoor of the house.

‘That’s the picture he may have observed, the image of the girls within the T-shirts, smiling and glad, is the picture he could have seen as they walked in opposition to him that evening and it’s that juxtaposition of what took place.

‘Of the T-shirts already being burnt in a bin.

‘the fact the ladies were laying in a shallow grave, and he knew that, and each time he noticed that poster he knew what had took place.
